One of the finest videos produced to date on Tlingit history, this tape
reviews in a well-written narrative accompanied by historical photographs and
contemporary footage, the historical events of 1882 that culminated in the U.S.
naval bombardment of Angoon. The question of possible causes is raised: was it
accidental or deliberate? Was it out of malice or a failure of cross-cultural
communication? The video documents the situation one hundred years later in the
words of Gov. Jay Hammond and the people of Angoon, descendants of those who
suffered the bombardment, filmed during a ceremony of remembrance and healing on
Oct. 26, 1982, marking the 100th anniversary of the event. Because the conflict
was never diplomatically resolved, the tape poses the unanswered question of
resolution. Produced and directed by Larry Goldin, VHS, 28 minutes. 1982
