The Tlingit Culture, Language & Literacy program was the first bilingual and bicultural classroom
in the Juneau School District and the only course of its kind in Southeast
Alaska. One of the goals of the program is to increase academic success
of Alaska Native children by instilling pride of heritage in students,
who range in age from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Enrolled Native students have demonstrated significant academic improvement
on assessments since the program was launched in the 2000-2001 school
year, according to an independent evaluator in a report released in 2002.
In the second year of the program, many enrolled Native students not only
matched their Native and non-Native peers in other classes on assessments
but often outperformed them, sometimes by wide margins, the report said...(more)

The class, initially sponsored by SHI and the Juneau School District, was
first
funded in part by a U.S. Department of Education, Indian Demonstration
Grant to SHI. It is open to any child in the district, which has
assumed financial responsibility for the program. Parents
