Subsistence Dr. Rosita Worl, president of Sealaska Heritage Institute, is a vocal proponent in legal and political forums for subsistence hunting and fishing rights. Worl frequently testifies for SHI before the state Legislature and Congress on subsistence issues. As a board member of Alaska Federation of Natives and chair of AFN's Subsistence Committee, Worl has helped develop strategies to ward off amendments to subsistence protections under the Alaska National Interest Consevation Act (ANILCA). Worl, through AFN, also has fought legal suits challenging subsistence protections granted under ANILCA and other legal regimes. In addition, Worl served as an advisor to President Bill Clinton on subsistence issues. SHI also assists tribal members in subsistence disputes. In a recent example, SHI provided assistance to Sitka tribal members attempting to secure a reasonable opportunity to harvest herring roe for subsistence.
