Public Education

Sealaska Heritage Institute frequently is called upon to respond to questions about Southeast Alaska Native cultures from individuals, schools, government entities, the media and private businesses from across the state and country. A recent notable request came from the JASON Foundation and National Geographic Society, recent co-sponsors of the annual JASON Project Expedition. SHI provided a two-hour presentation on Tlingit culture to about 60 people associated with the expedition. In another example, SHI answered questions about Tlingit people for a children's book on Tlingit people. In May 2002, SHI helped organize and teach a class on looting and vandalism problems associated with archeological sites on Indian and federal lands, and in June, SHI President Rosita Worl did a video interview on Tlingit children in foster care. SHI routinely is asked to speak to a broad spectrum of issues affecting Native peoples, and the Institute responds to as many requests as possible because this outreach is vital to its mission to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian culture.

In addition, SHI often nominates Native persons and advocates for public awards. Such recognition raises the public's awareness about Native issues and Native contributions.
