Copyright Issues
Under Native traditional law, clans own crests, stories, songs, and much of
the regalia and crests are protected by copyright. People or entities
commercially using images of certain Native crests without permission
may be in violation of copyright laws. SHI routinely helps Southeast Alaska
Natives enforce their rights in this arena. For example, SHI in 2001 stopped
a commercial firm from reproducing a Chilkat Blanket on dolls sold as
Christmas ornaments. Copyright of photos and video productions by non-Natives
of Celebration is an unresolved
issue and remains a top priority of SHI (See Celebration Photo
Policy).
