Increase the number of qualified Alaska Native teachers graduating from the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) Improve on-campus support for Alaska Native students Collaborate with partners to build a support network for P.I.T.A.A.S. participants Cultivate culturally responsive and culturally supportive programs at UAS by modifying the existing Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Bachelor of Science programs
Components of P.I.T.A.A.S.: Mentor responsibilities: Meet with students throughout the year and provide information on becoming a teacher as well as working with them on study skills Participate in an on-line course to discuss their roles as a mentor and collaborate with other mentors Opportunity for Bread Loaf School of English teacher fellowships. Student responsibilities: Participate in online writing to exchange ideas and thoughts with students from other districts Apply for scholarships (including P.I.T.A.A.S.) and take UAS placement exams Opportunity to attend the P.I.T.A.A.S. Summer Institute to experience dormitory life, meet University faculty, participate in the Sealaska Kusteeyi’ Program and get to know the community of Juneau UAS Scholarship will include tuition, books and lodging (which includes a meal allowance) The Native/Rural Student Center will provide academic counseling and if needed, tutoring in math and language arts Students can join WOOCH EEN – Native student club, which hosts many activities to foster the spirit of Native achievement and culture Students will have an Activities Coordinator who is Alaska Native Enrollment in a course focusing on Native Alaskan education, culture and history Undergraduate teacher education program and additional course offerings at UAS
