Bilingual Teacher Training
This program helps teachers work more effectively with Native students who are coping with language barriers. Although most Southeast Alaska Native children are not bilingual, their language skills are affected by their parents and grandparents, who learned English as a second language. The course is offered for five graduate-level credits at the University of Alaska Southeast. The program, sponsored by SHI, is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education.
