Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) will sponsor a Native high-fashion show at its second Tináa Art Auction, a fundraiser to support critical Native art and culture programs.

The institute currently is inviting artists and fashion designers to submit original pieces for the show, to be held Sept. 29, 2017, in Juneau.

The Native fashion show was one of the highlights of SHI’s premiere Tináa Art Auction, which drew a sold-out, black-tie crowd of more than 300 people in 2014. The fashion show included a range of garments made of natural materials such fish skin, sea otter fur and leather. For example, designer Brenda Lee Asp showed a hooded jumpsuit and leather and silk bustier with formline designs, while artist Ricky Tagaban featured a Chilkat-woven halter top, topped with fur.

“The 2014 fashion show was remarkable, as we saw designs and fashions we had never seen before,” said SHI President Rosita Worl. “The designers and artists astounded us with their creativity and originality.”

The designers in the 2014 show included Brenda Lee Asp, Janice Jackson, Joel Isaak, Kandi McGilton, Louise Kadinger, Marcus J Gho, Ricky Tagaban and Shaadoo’tlaa.

The show is open to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The application deadline is July 21, 2017.

Sealaska Heritage Institute is a private nonprofit founded in 1980 to promote cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding through public services and events.
