Press Release Feb. 21, 2003 SHI OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR EXPANDED NATIVE LANGUAGE PROGRAM Sealaska Heritage Institute is accepting scholarship applications for language teachers and students to attend its newly expanded Native language workshops. SHI scholarships will help cover the costs for language teachers and students to receive specialized training in Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian languages as part of the institute’s annual Sealaska Kusteeyí Program. The application deadline is March 14. SHI expanded its fifth annual Sealaska Kusteeyí Program after receiving a three-year federal grant from the Administration for Native Americans in 2002 to provide language immersion retreats. The workshops this year will be held in Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka and Glacier Bay. The workshops in Juneau and Ketchikan will follow a classroom format and run Aug. 4-15 in Juneau and May 19-30 in Ketchikan. The Sitka and Glacier Bay workshops will follow an immersion-camp format, meaning participants will live at remote camps and vow to speak only Tlingit during the retreats. The Tlingit immersion retreats will run June 2-13 at a camp near Sitka and Sept. 8-19 at Glacier Bay Lodge in Glacier Bay. Native language instruction is central to the mission of the institute, said Dr. Rosita Worl, president of Sealaska Heritage Institute, a nonprofit founded to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures. "One of our top priorities is to perpetuate Native languages. Our annual workshops are an important tool toward achieving that goal, so we are excited to expand the program this year," Worl said. Scholarship support is available on a competitive basis to teachers of Native languages and people who sincerely intend to become Native language teachers. Scholarships are available only to Alaska Natives who are Sealaska shareholders or descendents of shareholders. All classes are open to the public, space permitting.
