ALASKA ONE TO BROADCAST CELEBRATION DOCUMENTARY

Public broadcasting stations in Alaska will air a documentary next week exploring Southeast Alaska Native culture through Celebration, a biennial festival sponsored by Sealaska Heritage Institute.

The 30-minute documentary, "Voices Of Our Ancestors," offers an historical perspective on Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian culture and explains the meaning of songs, crests, dances and regalia featured at Celebration, the largest gathering of Southeast Natives.

The program, produced by the Institute, includes comments from elders on traditions and the importance of perpetuating the culture. It also shows video of Celebration 2000, the most recent festival. The 2000 event drew more than 1,700 dancers to Juneau from across the state and the Lower 48 to celebrate the culture.

The documentary will air at 8 p.m., March 13 on KUAC-TV in Fairbanks, KTOO-TV in Juneau, KYUK-TV in Bethel, KIAL-TV in Unalaska and KMXT-TV in Kodiak.
