Press Release June 8, 2002 KATO TAKES TOP AWARD FOR BLACK SEAWEED You can roast black seaweed in the oven or dry it with a fan, but a panel of judges who tasted the delicacy in June preferred it dried the old-fashioned way. Henriette Kato of Klawock took first place for her sun-dried seaweed, entered in the first Sealaska black seaweed contest held during Celebration 2002. Nearly 20 people competed for the top award worth $500. Crystal Duncan of Sitka won $250 at second place, and Peggy Williams of Angoon took home $100 at third place. Honorable mentions went to Tina Martin of Hoonah and Jerry Moy of Pelican.
