Press Release July 16, 2003 SEALASKA HERITAGE INSTITUTE TO OFFER LANGUAGE WORKSHOP IN JUNEAU Sealaska Heritage Institute is offering its sixth, annual Juneau Sealaska Kusteeyí program, a two-week Native language class. The course runs July 19-30 at the University of Alaska Southeast, Auke Lake Campus, Egan Library classrooms. People may register for the workshop through Sealaska Heritage Institute at the university on Monday. The workshop this year will feature courses in Tlingit and Tsimshian for novice and intermediate students and teaching methods for Alaska Native languages, including instruction on the popular Total Physical Response teaching technique. Students will learn from a team of young Tlingit speakers instead of a single teacher as in previous years. “This year we’ve been working with 10 highly motivated young people who have been studying Tlingit for the last few years and are starting to become Tlingit language teachers,” said Dr. Rosita Worl, president of the institute. “We’ve been giving them intensive practice not only at teaching the language but how to develop new lesson plans, new games and new songs. The classes will be fun and fast moving.” Sealaska Heritage, a Native nonprofit, sponsors the Sealaska Kusteeyí program to support and strengthen Native language and culture revitalization. The course allows Native language instructors and mature students from across the region to gather and focus on language acquisition and effective teaching methods.
