Press Release June 6, 2005 SEALASKA HERITAGE
TO SPONSOR CHILKAT DESIGN CLASS The class will cover basic form-line design principles based on traditional Tlingit work from the nineteenth century and before. Chilkat design is based on 18th century Tlingit and Tsimshian design work, so the class will explore examples of this style from the historic period. Students will learn how the designs are formed and their traditional characteristics and work on composing new designs to fit particular shapes such as robe designs, tunics, aprons and special objects. The class is scheduled June 13-16 from 6-9 p.m. in the Sealaska boardroom in Juneau. Enrollment preference will be given to artists. Registration fee is $75. For more information call 463-4844.
