WINNERS OF SEALASKA JURIED ART COMPETITION TO BE ANNOUNCED

Sealaska Heritage Institute will host a public opening Wednesday to announce the winners of the biennial Sealaska Juried Art Show and Competition for Native artists.

SHI received applications from 22 Native artists who submitted 46 pieces for consideration. The winning artists will attend the reception to meet the public and to talk about their art, which is for sale.

The winners were chosen by internationally renowned Native artist Robert Davidson and Northwest Coast art scholar Aldona Jonaitis, director of the state University of Alaska Museum of the North in Fairbanks.

Jonaitis, also a juror for the Sealaska Juried Art Show in 2002, saw considerable improvement in pieces submitted this year.

“There were more pieces that exhibited the fine craftsmanship one expects from high-quality Northwest Coast art, and the works reflected a deeper understanding of the form line system,” Jonaitis said. “I’m very optimistic about the development of Native art in Southeast Alaska.”

Winners will receive seven prizes in the following categories:

   Top Prize

  • Best of Show: $1,500

   Traditional Art

  • 1st  Place: $1,000
  • 2nd Place:    $750
  • 3rd Place:    $500

   Contemporary Art

  • 1st  Place: $1,000
  • 2nd Place:    $750
  • 3rd Place:    $500

The show opening is scheduled 5-6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 2, in the foyer of Sealaska Plaza. In addition to the award-winning pieces, the jurors will select additional entries for inclusion in the Juried Art Show, which will be open to the public from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 3-July 2, 2004 and Saturday, June 5, in the Sealaska foyer. The art show is scheduled to coincide with Celebration, which runs June 3-5.

Sealaska Heritage Institute founded the biennial Juried Art Show and Competition in 2002 to promote the development of Southeast Alaska Native arts.  The goals of the Juried Art Show are:

-To encourage and enhance the creation and production of Southeast Alaska Native objects of artistic value which have fallen into disuse and are becoming rare.

-To stimulate and enhance the quality of artistic work among our Native artisans.

-To encourage the development of new forms of art of purely Southeast Alaska Native form and design.

To ensure an objective judging process, the names of the artists were not included with the photos of objects viewed during selection.

Sealaska Heritage Institute is a Native nonprofit founded by Sealaska Corp. in 1981 to administer the corporation’s cultural programs. The mission of the Institute is to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures.
