Research
Introduction
Researching materials held by Sealaska Heritage Institute can be done in a variety of ways. Hard copy
finding aids (descriptive inventories) of all our collection holdings
are available at on our onsite facility for browsing, and/or our
collections are cataloged in searchable online catalogs (see below). At
our onsite facility we provide a reading room area where patrons can sit
down at a workstation to view our materials, as well as limited computer
access on a provided computer (reserved for research purposes) and free Wi-Fi to anyone with their own laptop. Upon request we can generate
copies of materials from our collections (fee
schedule). For additional inquiry or questions please
contact the archivist.
Archival & Ethnographic
Collections
Search Our Archival Catalog
Our archival
collections, which consist of manuscript papers, photographs,
recordings, and ethnographic items, are cataloged online and can be
searched via a special searchable database by clicking on the above
link. This catalog is similar to a regular library catalog in some
regards, but is specifically designed to be user-friendly for archival
researching by allowing you to find materials by creator, subject, type
of record, keyword search, and other methods. Once a desired item is
found, please write down the Call Number and other bibliographic
information and visit our facility. Patrons unable to visit our onsite
facility should contact the archivist for information about generating
scans or photocopies.
Book Collection
Search Our Book Collection Catalog*
Beginning in early 2009, the process of cataloging our book collection
in the CCLIC (Capital Cities Library Information Center) was begun, and
cataloged books can be searched by clicking on the above link. The CCLIC
is a multiple-library online catalog shared by cooperating Juneau
libraries, including the Alaska State Library, University of Alaska
Southeast, and local public libraries. Once a desired book—located at
our facility—is identified, please write down the Call Number and other
bibliographic information and visit our facility. Since we are a small
library, our books are currently non-circulating and
we currently do not offer ILL (Inter-Library Loan) services. However,
should you need ILL services most public libraries offer ILL services
and can assist you. If you are unable to find the book you desire in a
local library please view
WorldCat (a
‘world’ catalog of the books) to assist you in finding the book you
need, which can often be ILL-ed to a library near you.
