William Paul, Jr., Photo Collection

William Paul, Jr. In October 2002, Ben Paul donated to SHI copies of an historic photo collection taken by his father, William Paul, Jr. (right).

William Paul, Jr., snapped the photographs while serving as ANB secretary and working on Alaska Native land claims issues with his father, William Paul, Sr. (below).

The collection features Southeast Alaska Native people during the 1940s through the 1950s, and they are a joy to view.

William Paul, Sr.However, much of the information identifying people, places and events depicted in the photographs has been lost.

"My father died a little young for a Paul," wrote Ben Paul in a biography of his father. "The notes he left are incomplete. I missed my chance to confer with him about these things."

We are hoping you will help! If you recognize anyone or anything in the photos, please share your knowledge. Just click on the link at the top of each photo album to pass information to Ben Paul and to Sealaska Heritage Institute. We are interested in anything you have to say about the photos -- perhaps you remember some of these events and have stories or memories to share?

As we gather the information, we'll add it to the photo collection, which is divided into albums on SHI's website. Some of the information posted may be in error or list only partial names -- please let us know if you can correct or add to the information.

We hope you enjoy these special images as much as we do. And please spread the word about this web page  -- we want to hear from as many people as possible! Gunalcheesh! Háw’aa! ‘Doyck-shin!
