Curry-Weissbrodt Collection James E. Curry and I.S. Weissbrodt acted as the attorneys on behalf of the Tlingit and Haida to resolve aboriginal land claims. Curry and Weissbrodt drafted many of the documents and collected other relevant material that now constitute the Curry-Weissbrodt archival collection. The Curry papers were created or generated by James E. Curry and associates from the 1930s to the 1950s and include materials relating to the Alaska Native Brotherhood, and issues of concern to the Tlingit and Haida, such as fishing rights and regulations, timber development, and possessory rights of Alaska Natives. The Weissbrodt papers were created and gathered by I.S. Weissbrodt and associates from 1957 to the 1970s and document the administration and activities of the early Tlingit and Haida Central Council, general land-claims of the period, and the more specific documents relating to the enactment of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA). In 1981, the entire collection was gifted to the Sealaska Heritage Institute from Tlingit and Haida Central Council. In 1999, the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded a grant to SHI to digitize and make the collection available on the Internet. SHI has posted the following documents to give a preview of the recently digitized collection before it is launched on the World Wide Web with full search-and-index capabilities. SHI believes this collection will further its mission and show ways Alaska Natives can preserve and document their histories through digital library development and conservation.
