Memorial Donations

The Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian of Southeast Alaska hold ceremonies to honor their ancestors. They believe their ancestors return to participate in ceremonies when the names of the deceased are called and when gifts are offered. Today, this practice also is conducted in secular activities such as the biennial Celebration.

If you would like to honor an ancestor, memorial donation envelopes will be available at the Sealaska Heritage Institute sales table. Please present completed and sealed donation envelopes to the state moderator at Centennial Hall. The donation will be announced onstage between performances, posted on SHI’s website and printed in the program guide for Celebration 2008. Donation funds are used to support Celebration activities.
