Canoeing Events
Celebration 2006 will include two canoeing events; the Canoe Welcome Ceremony and the Canoe Races. For the welcome ceremony, the participating canoes will start from Sandy Beach, will cross Gastineau Channel, and arrive for a traditional canoe welcome at Marine Park around 6 pm, Wednesday, May 31.
The Canoe Races, which is a community sponsored event, will be held at Sandy Beach on Sunday, June 4, from 2-5 pm. In 2004, there were five canoe teams racing and over 1,000 people attended the event. Teams must register to participate. SHI will give complimentary t-shirts to racers. (Register) Registration forms also may be picked up at SHI's Juneau office.
